Justin, in response:

  1. About two, usually. In my experience the operating system is usually irrelevant, which may come as a shock to cognitively-dissonant Mac fans. Having a reliable connection is definitely a factor, though. I got one of these a couple of months back; the freedom it gives is fantastic, but it can still be bloody irritating and needs constant ejecting/remounting. The software is also completely useless for logging onto Starbucks hotspots, which is remarkable given that's one of its main functions. So: find a reliable fully-open node and treasure it like a friendly kitten.

  2. No, but I have very rarely used laptops in cafes, let alone left one long enough to be nicked.

  3. It depends who you're sitting on.

  4. At the end of a GigE line in the New York MAE-East POP.
