The greeting, should you wish to greet anyone, is "l'shana tova" - to a good new year. Some people add "metuka" on the end' to a good and sweet new year. Honey figures heavily in the menu, for the sweet angle. I didn't make honey cake this year, because I didn't want to eat it (though it is great: my friend Paul's Aunty Lynne's recipe has never let me down), and it's apple and honey tonight.
Here's what I wish for (not that it's a Jewish custom, particularly, just that New Year focuses my mind on what I want):
1 World peace, and not in a beauty queen way. I pray for resolution in Israel/Palestine and no more heartsinking feeling everytime I hear news of more deaths.
2 A newspaper column; ideally, in saturday's Guardian Weekend magazine, but I'd be delighted with any weekend supplement. Or Carpet Tile Weekly. Lifestyle is my middle name.
3 Could be linked to the above, but some kind of regular revenue, ideally from writing.
4 A new, improved body (unlikely, I know).
5 Enhanced relationships... I could say so much about this, but my manicurist awaits me....
So I wish you all a peaceful year, filled with everything you desire for yourselves. I didn't send email to everyone I know, saying the same; I'm into pull-technology seasonal greetings. But I still mean it. And I do have a deep, spiritual side, I just don't show it here.
